China is the largest producer and consumer of pork in the world. In 2015, the amount of pig slaughter and pork production in China occupied 55.1% and 49.7% of the world; the import and consumption of pork are 15.4% and 50.7%, respectively；and the per capita consumption of pork is up to 41 kg which ranks top 5 in the world. As the world-leading producer and consumer of pork, it is indeed a brilliant achievement made by China's pork industry. Meanwhile, It means that China's pork industry has stepped from the era of short supply, into the phase of coordination of supply and demand. However, we may also find out that the efficiency of China's pork production is still not high enough, and the amounts of pig slaughter and carcass weight are even lower than the world average. Obviously, raising productivity should be one of the core problems of conceptual design of China's swine industry in the future.
After bidding 3 times for IPVS in the past 12 years, the bidding group of Chinese Association of Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine (CAAV), which was led by Prof. Yang Hanchun, representing China's swine technology and production industry, finally beat Brazil by weak advantage in the IPVS2014 in Cancun, and successfully had IPVS2018 to be hosted in Chongqing. The objective of IPVS is to promote the deep communication related to the experience, technologies and knowledge in global pig health and production, which will be an excellent opportunity for China swine technology and production industry to improve themselves, and also beneficial to raise overall productivity and quality in China swine industry.
The success of winning the bid for IPVS2018---the world-class conference focusing on swine disease research, marks the world's recognition towards the development of China swine technology and production industry, as well as the abilities and conditions to host an international conference. It is not only an honor for CAAV, who always upholds the faith that to build our nation with technologies, to strength the country through talents and to promote industry development by advanced science, but the practical action and contribution to gain more involvement in worldwide communication and cooperation for China swine industry in academics and production. As a member of the executive committee of the International Pig Veterinary Society, Prof. Yang Hanchun, General Secretary of CAAV and professor of China Agricultural University, took up the post of president of IPVS after winning the bid, which is the credit both to himself and the overall China swine technology and production industry.
The delight of winning the bid has been the past. We should point out the challenges in the process of hosting the conference while looking forward to the opportunity that IPVS would bring for China swine industry development. The first is the challenge to conference organization. Dating back to the history of IPVS, there was a continuous growth in the attendance of past 24 IPVS conferences--- over 3000 delegates attended in IPVS2012 Korea and a breaking record of 3600 delegates attended in IPVS2016 Ireland. So we anticipate IPVS2018 in China will also create a new record in attendance. The goal of the organizing committee is to make IPVS2018 a more informative international conference with more participants and higher standards. To be honest, it is a hard work and will be accomplished with the joint efforts of domestic technology industry. The second is the challenge to the production industry. China swine industry always keeps learning and interchanging by hosting activities with the production and technology industry and foreign swine industry. Due to the complicated breeding environment in China, it is hard to figure out one solution that can thoroughly solve the problem. For China swine industry, to gain advanced experience, technologies and solutions that are valuable to individuals and corporations, we should improve our abilities in cognition, judgment and comprehensive analysis. Apart from which, effective ability in communication and language skills are also inevitable on increasing corporations' competency, industry's overall quality, and the sustainable development capacity. The third challenge is to China swine technology industry. From the conference historical data, there was a constant growth in thesis submitted, and IPVS2016 in Ireland received over 1000 thesis. However, it could not be ignored that among those, we have relatively few thesis from China. Therefore, the opportunities for Chinese experts doing oral report are correspondingly less, and the chances to be invited speaker are very rare. Although part of the reason is the limitation of scientific research level, it is mainly because with the relatively weak English presentation skill, domestic specialists have difficulties in fully expressing themselves and communicating with foreign swine industry. After all, the core of IPVS is technology exchange. Hence, for our swine technology industry, it is both a challenge and drive to break though the language barrier so as to display Chinese scientific research progresses as well as absorb foreign experience and achievement. The last is to keep the continuity value of international conference in China. In recent four years, CAAV has hosted and bid for 3 international academic conference--- WCAP2013， hosted every five years; WPC2016, hosted every four years and the upcoming IPVS2018, hosted every two years. And dating further back, we have hosted large international conferences like APIMONDIA1993, WVPA2007 and so on. Conferences mentioned above are all hosted by international associations, which have the long history and great international influence. In every certain year, the conference is held in turn in member country， and it is quite hard to get the opportunity repeatedly hosting the conference. Thus, domestic experts and scholars come up with an idea that it is not the end to host one conference. However, we should keep learning from professional associations on experience of hosting international conference, and the ability to creating the intellectual and cooperative atmosphere, because that is the way to keep the continuity value alive in China.
In terms of that, CAAV starts to reconsider conference system. According to the actual demand from industry and academia, we should localize correspondingly in order to be geared to international standards, and aim at opening-up to the world while taking root in domestic with independent intellectual property rights on the basis of keeping the continuity value of international conferences alive in China. In Chinese Swine Science Conference, hosted in 2015, was the first time CAAV tried to put this thought into practice.
2016 is the 80th anniversary of CAAV. Being integrity and hardworking, serving as a role model and being ready for the public are not only the basis for CAAV to develop itself from generation to generation, but a guarantee of a prosperous future. We believe that with the support and trust of Chinese colleagues in swine industry, CAAV will try to gather powers of all parts to offer a more informative international conference with more participants and higher standards to world swine technology and production industry.
In the end, IPVS2018 will be an opportunity for us to make contributions to the sustainable development of China swine industry and we are looking forward to IPVS2018, from June 11th to 14th,2018, to be convened successfully in Chongqing.
